My work acts as a way for me to avoid verbally hard conversations. It is a reflection of my innermost feelings. I create with the intention to bare my thoughts and feelings to the world, as if I ripped out my own heart, and used the blood as my paint. I want my viewers to understand that my work is visceral. Not grotesque, but within me, a part of me, and an extension of my being.
I am deliberate in my pursuit to establish my identity, within myself, as a black woman. I utilize the experiences that are associated most within black culture, and it leads the conversations that are expressed through my work. There is power in what is unsaid and I work vigorously to display that. What is meant for you to understand will be understood.
